The incline Railway is an icon located along the side of Lookout Mountain in the historic neighborhood of St. Elmo in Chattanooga, TN. The thrill of riding this amazing incline has been please many visitors over the last century. The railway has been in operation since 1895 and is a National Historic site and Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Visitors can even tour the machine room where the giant gears are working to take its passengers to and from this mountain to enjoy the awesome views. You can ride the incline one way to Point Park at the mountain summit and enjoy those spectacular views of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River. The incline gets its name from the 72.7% grade that the train travels up and down along side the mountain. It has been named one of the steepest passenger railways. This is a great tourist attraction and definitely something the kids would enjoy.
