If you love to hike and explore, the Upper Cumberland Plateau is the perfect place to be. While there are many small trails to enjoy, here are a few awesome trails that I think you will enjoy and I want to share with you. These are all very close to Deer Creek Cabin and Rocky Top Cabin and make for great day trips.
Waterfall Hike at Cookeville’s City Lake-This is a great place to get kids involved in hiking. This is a short wide path and allows the kids to enjoy the creek that runs along side the path. There is also a beautiful little waterfall at the end of the trail for the kids to play and splash around.
Black Mountain Loop Trail-This hike is a definite early morning trek. You can enjoy your coffee while you walk this short 1.8 mile hike and enjoy the sun rise and all the scenery around you. Enjoy the footbridge that spans across a deep crevasse and arrive at an enormous flat rock with a breathtaking view of Grassy Cove, Watts Bar Lake and from afar-the Great Smokey Mountains. This area is a beautiful spot for great scenic pictures that will make for many good memories.
Twin Falls-Located near Great Falls Dam at the end of Powerhouse Road in Walling and you can step out and take in the breathtaking views of the falls. Dazzling cascades surround you for fantastic views. This area has lots of trails so be sure to pack a lunch or dinner and stay awhile.
Medley Arch/Natural Bridge-If you are the adventure seeker in the bunch, you must give this a try. This 2 mile up and down hike is located on the outskirts of Fall Creek Falls State Park. Five miles north of the park entrance on State Route 30, pull off where the sign says “Wheeler Farm Loop’ and follow the trail. Keep an eye on where you are at and you will end up finding an great view.
Virgin Falls in White County is the jewel in the Upper Cumberland ‘s hiking crown. This is definitely for the experienced hiker. This 9 mile round trip hike will reward you with pristine beauty that boasts four breathtaking waterfalls. They are Big Branch, Big Laurel, Sheep Cave Falls and Virgin Falls. Be sure to take water and snacks and DO NOT forget your camera.
