Standing Stone State Forest-Beautiful Area!

Get ready for a day of adventure and awe!  Standing Stone State Forest is a beautiful forest that is attached to Standing Stone State Park.  Unlike the state park, the state forest does not have recreational facilities, although public access is permitted.  When the United States Department of Agriculture acquired the land for Standing Stone State Forest in the 1930’s it was in very poor shape.  It had been depleted over the years by fires, logging and farming.   Standing Stone State Forest was selected as a state forest in 1961.  The forest consists of upland hardwoods, pine and mixed hardwood and pine.  Some of the trees are over 80 years old.  Take a cool walk along the crest of Cooper Mountain and enjoy the trees and wildlife.  The Cooper Mountain Loop Trail circles through several miles of the the state forest on the slopes of Cooper Mountain before reentering the state park.  Just a fun little thing to do while you are here is The National Rolley Hole Marbles Championship held every September at Standing Stone State Park.  Rolley hole is a type of marbles game popular with marble enthusiasts in the Tennessee-Kentucky Region.  Other events held at the park are the Spring Naturalist Rally and the Standing Stone Car Show held in October.  So while you are here for a visit to Deer Creek Cabin or Rocky Top Cabin, be sure to take a ride over to this beautiful forest and enjoy all it has to offer.
